World Suicide Prevention Day 2021

Tomorrow, (10th September) is world suicide prevention day. Run by Samaritans, Mind, and others under the banner of the National Suicide Prevention Alliance (NSPA), the day sees charities, individuals and businesses come together around a theme related to suicide and mental health. This year, the theme is “Creating Hope Through Action.”

The aim of this theme is to empower people to engage with the complex concept of hope. NSPA are asking what gives people hope, what has kept us going through the hard times, and how we can best have hope for the future.

Suicide remains the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK, and the pandemic and associated quarantines have contributed to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and despair over the last year. That’s why it’s more important than ever to keep having these conversations; to check in with our friends, family, and colleagues, and to support one another where we can. Businesses, too, can help reduce the stigma around talking about mental health, and put robust procedures in place to support employees through difficult periods.

As part of our own commitment to supporting better mental health, we launched our Workplace Wellness Programme back in 2019, and to support Mind, we’ll be raising money by taking part in a month-long ‘Stroudathon’, where we each try to walk 10,000 steps every single day for a month.
